Dear Families of 201,
It's hard to believe we are already wrapping up our 5th week of school! I'm happy to have met so many of you at open house and meet and greet. If we haven’t gotten a chance to meet and talk about your child, please get in touch with me to schedule a meeting. These meetings have been invaluable to me as I get to know your child, and will help me to better meet their needs this year. It is important that I meet with every family to establish a relationship for the year.
Reading
In Reading Workshop, we have built a solid foundation, learning strategies to make our reading lives the best they can be. We are reading From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, which I am reading aloud to model how to better understand stories by checking for comprehension, making predictions, and retelling stories. These are all skills you can practice with your child at home. We are also using RAZ-kids accounts. I encourage you to access this resource at home for books at your child’s reading level. Third graders should be reading for 30 minutes a night and recording their reading on their reading logs.
Writing
In Writing Workshop, we are moving towards publishing our first personal narrative writing pieces of the year, having spent several weeks building our writing stamina and independence, practicing strategies to avoid “Blank Page Syndrome,” and using “show, don’t tell” to make a movie in our readers’ minds. We did "surgery" (revisions) to our drafts and learned about when to add paragraphs to our writing.
Math
In math, we are learning that multiplication helps us find out the total when we know the “number of objects in each group” and the “number of groups,” and can also be used to find out “times as much/many” problems. We have learned several skip counting songs to help us with 2s, 3s, 4,s and 5s. We also learned “kuku,” the Japanese method of learning the multiplication tables. I encourage you to have your child sing/chant these for you at home, and practice them often! We will be learning foundational facts of 2’s, 5’s, 3’s, and 4’s before learning strategies for the rest of the multiplication table. Students are using the computer program ST Math to reinforce mathematical concepts.
Social Studies
As part of the PYP, we have been learning about how our beliefs and values cause us to take action. We finished reading about Belva Lockwood and her fight for women's rights. Throughout the year we will continue to ask ourselves how we can take action to align with our beliefs and values.
Friday Reflections
Thank you to those who have been returning the Friday Reflections notebook! It is very important to me that your child be in communication with you about what is going on at school. Students like to reread parent comments from the previous week as they get started on their newest Friday Reflection, and the little boost of encouragement from your notes means a lot to them.
Upcoming Dates/Reminders
Your third grader needs your help getting everything to and from school. Please refer to the chart below for our weekly routines for turning in work and getting it back. Consider posting it in a prominent location in your house, so that you and your child can remember when things are due and can develop routines at home for checking and packing backpacks. Please check the Homework Folder every day for flyers and homework.
Lastly, please take a moment to peruse my website, mswagner5.weebly.com
And because this can never be said enough, THANK YOU for all that you do for your child! You have the hardest job in the world. :)
Sincerely,
Ms. Wagner

Sinceramente,
Sra. Wagner
