Good morning families in 201,
Here are updates from the week!
My apologies for my 2 day absence this week! On that note, I hope you are all healthy and getting plenty of rest.
Literacy (reading, writing, spelling): We learned about choosing just right books this week and learned how to decide if a book is too easy, too hard, or the right level. Students now have their own book bin with books at their reading level that they read each day. Continue to read any and all books at home each night! In writing, students continued working writing true stories. We learned about making a "mental movie" of what happened and writing stories using small details. Spelling homework began this week; students can choose to do activities from their Speller's Choice Menu in their homework folders OR do activities on Spellingcity.com with their list of words. Login information was sent home yesterday. Normally spelling lists go home Mondays and tests are Fridays.
Math: We continued our multiplication unit and learned about repeated addition and skip counting. Students should have access to ST math at home - let me know if that is not the case and I will look into it. Their multiplication unit test will be coming up in the next 2 weeks.
Social Studies: We are working on our Activist IB unit in social studies. Ask your student about Cesar Chavez, who we read about yesterday, the injustices he faced, and what action he took to fight the injustices. Today is the International Day of Peace and the theme is Climate Change. We watched a Ted Talk from a young person who is an activist for climate change and made posters demonstrating an action each of us could take to help combat climate change.
Homework: Nightly homework consists of reading 30 minutes, filling out reading log, and 15 minutes (about 3 activities of spelling work). Reading logs go home Monday and are due the next Monday. Spelling work done at home does NOT need to be turned in to me. It is for them to practice the words so they can be successful on Friday's spelling test. If you ever feel like the homework is too much for your student or your family time, let me know. I never want homework to feel like a burden.
Reflective Friday (homework for parents!): We started our weekly Reflective Fridays today. Students each received a notebook and wrote on the right side pages about their week this week. The left side of the pages are reserved for parents/adults to write back to your student. They are VERY excited to get a note back from you :) There is a letter in their homework folder explaining the process; notebooks go home each Friday and are returned Monday. I store them in the classroom until we use them again. Be prepared to see so much progress this year!
Feel free to reach out with questions, as always.
Yours in Service,
Ms. Wagner
Ms. Wagner
