Hello families of 201!
Thank you to all of you who came to open house last night! It was so great to get to see all of you and show you around our classroom. For those of you who were unable to make it, I've sent the documents home with your student. Feel free to reach out with any questions, as always.
Here are updates from the week:
Reading
This week we started reading groups and rotations. Students are in an assigned reading group (named after our IB unit activists) and meet with me multiple times each week. When they are not meeting with me and their reading group, they are independently reading books, reading and taking quizzes on RazKids, or practicing their spelling words. We learned about pronouns and proper/common nouns. Students took their first spelling test today.
Writing
We continued our true story writing unit this week, focusing on the students' small moments that they are making into a story. Students learned about making a movie in their mind to remember all of the details that happened, retelling/rewriting their story to remember even more details, taking time to remember how to spell words that they already know, and trying out different leads (beginnings/hooks) for their stories to appeal to readers. We practiced starting our stories with dialogue, action, or details.
Math
We finished our first multiplication unit on equal groups! Students took their test yesterday. This week they practiced multiplication facts, skip counting songs, did number talks and a dot talk. Students received differentiated math work to help them practice skills and challenge themselves. We will begin our new unit on Monday - continuing our work on multiplication. If your student is looking for a challenge or extra practice at home, see the Helpful Links tab on our classroom website (mswagner5.weebly.com) for links to worksheets or online games.
Social Studies/IB
We continued our Activist IB Unit and learned about Wangari Maathai and Frederick Douglass. Ask your student to tell you about them, their values, the injustice(s) they faced, and the action they took to make it right.
Upcoming Dates/Reminders:
Have a great weekend!
